The Value of Pilot Studies
In 1940 John Steinbeck sailed in a sardine boat with his great friend, the biologist Ed Ricketts, to collect marine invertebrates from the beaches of the Gulf of California. In the process he managed to describe the chief reason why pilot studies are so valuable.
